There are many ways to wear a saree, but here's a basic guide to get you started with a popular style called the Nivi drape. This is a simple and elegant draping technique suitable for most occasions.

Things you will need:

  • Saree (5-6 yards length)

  • Blouse (preferably fitting to tuck in)

  • Safety pins

  • Petticoat (optional, for added comfort and structure)

Steps:

1. Petticoat (Optional): If you're using a petticoat, wear it first. It helps with the drape and adds volume.

2. Pleating the Saree: Make neat pleats (around 1-2 inch width) starting from the end of the saree pallu (decorative end with elaborate work). These pleats will form the pallu that goes over the shoulder. There are different pleating techniques, but basic back and forth works well for beginners. Pin the pleats in place temporarily close to the end of the saree.

3. Drape Around the Waist: Secure the other end of the saree (non-pleated part) to your waist with a safety pin at the hip bone area. This part of the saree will be tucked in later.

4. Full Length Drape: Holding the pleated pallu section, bring it over your shoulder, draping it across your back and over the opposite shoulder. The pallu should spread across your back and chest. You can adjust the amount of pleats on your shoulder for comfort and drape.

5. Securing the Pallu: Bring the loose end of the pallu (the part that went over your shoulder) under your arm and tuck it securely into the waistband at the back, next to where you secured the other end of the saree. Use safety pins if needed for extra hold.

6. Front Tuck: Carefully take the remaining loose part of the saree (tucked at your waist in step 3) and neatly tuck it into the petticoat or directly into your blouse waistband, creating a smooth front. You can fan out the pleats a bit for a more voluminous look.

7. Adjust and Pin: Make any final adjustments to the pleats, pallu drape, and overall look. Use safety pins wherever needed for a secure and comfortable fit.

Tips:

  • Practice makes perfect! Don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries to get the drape right.

  • Watch video tutorials online for a visual demonstration of the draping process. There are many variations of the Nivi drape you can explore after mastering the basics.

  • Use a saree with a stiff or crisp feel for easier draping, especially when you're a beginner.

  • Opt for a comfortable blouse that allows for tucking the saree in without restricting movement.

  • There are pre-stitched sarees available that come with sewn pleats, making them easier to wear for those who find draping a challenge.

With a little practice and these steps, you'll be well on your way to mastering the beautiful art of wearing a saree!
